Frequently Asked Questions
What is trauma therapy?
Trauma therapy is support for people who continue to feel affected by difficult, distressing, or overwhelming experiences. It focuses on reducing the ongoing impact these experiences can have on emotions, reactions, memory, and day-to-day functioning.
How do I know if trauma therapy might be helpful?
Trauma therapy may be helpful if past experiences continue to affect how you feel, respond, or cope in the present. This can include distress linked to difficult memories, heightened anxiety, feeling easily overwhelmed, strong emotional reactions, or feeling stuck in patterns that are hard to shift.
Does trauma therapy always involve EMDR?
No. EMDR is one evidence-based approach that may be used within trauma therapy where it is appropriate. Sessions are tailored to your situation, and other approaches may be used first or alongside EMDR depending on your needs and goals.
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy used to help process distress linked to difficult or overwhelming experiences. It aims to reduce the emotional intensity of those experiences so they have less impact on you in the present.
Do I need to talk through everything in detail?
No. You do not need to describe every detail of what happened. The focus is on helping you work with the distress and impact of the experience in a way that feels manageable and appropriate.
What happens in the first session?
The first session focuses on understanding your concerns, history, and goals for therapy. This helps determine what approach is most appropriate and whether EMDR may be suitable as part of the work.
